Importing
What can I import?+
EPUB and PDF files, photos of pages, pasted text, audio files and podcasts. You can also open any website in the web reader and tap words straight on the page.
How does a photo import work?+
Take or choose a photo and it opens as a page in the reader. Pinch to zoom, then tap any word on it for a gloss. The text is recognised on your phone, so it works offline.
How do I add a podcast?+
Choose Add a podcast and paste the show's RSS link. The show lands on your shelf and every episode streams free. To read along, tap Transcribe on an episode; transcription is Premium and runs in the background, and you'll get a notification when it's ready.
Where do my imports live?+
On your phone. Books, PDFs and photos you import on the free plan are read on your device and never stored on our servers. Premium can sync your whole library across devices.
Words and reviews
What happens when I save a word?+
It joins your word bank with the sentence you found it in, and comes back in review on a spaced schedule (FSRS). Every kanji in it joins your kanji deck at the same time.
What does a review look like?+
The word appears blanked out in the sentence you saved it from. Recall it, reveal the answer, and say how well you knew it.
Is there a daily goal?+
Done means clearing today's review queue. You can choose how many new words and kanji to take on each day, or set a smaller daily target if you're working through a backlog. A day with nothing due is a rest day.
Can I export my saved words?+
Yes, on every plan, as CSV or an Anki-compatible file.
Kanji
How are kanji taught?+
Each kanji starts with a meet card: watch it drawn, tap its parts, trace it. After that it comes back in drills where you read it and draw it from memory, with a story built from its parts to help it stick.
What order do kanji come in?+
Kanji from words you've saved come first. Once today's queue is clear you can take on more, drawn from the most common kanji or a JLPT level.
Do I have to draw?+
No. You can turn handwriting off in settings and recall kanji from memory instead.
Plans and account
What's free and what's Premium?+
Everything on your device is free: importing, reading, saving up to 500 words, unlimited reviews and your first kanji. Premium ($9.99/month or $99/year) adds the full kanji course, an unlimited word bank, AI sentence translation, transcription, OCR for hard scans and library sync.
Do I need an account?+
Not to start. You'll need a free account to back up and sync your progress, and for anything that runs on our servers, like adding a podcast.
Can I use Yomidori offline?+
Yes. The dictionary, your imports, lookups and reviews all work without a connection.
What happens if I cancel?+
You keep everything and can keep reviewing it forever. Only adding new words or kanji beyond the free limits pauses.
How do I delete my account?+
In the app, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete account.
